Geocaching

Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played all over the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices or GPS-capable smart phones. The object of the game is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches (pronounced "geo-cashes"), outdoors and then share your experiences online. You can also hide geocaches and record their gps location and a 'hint' to their location in databases online, so that others can search for and locate your geocache.

I recently read about this phenomenon and was astounded at its global popularity. According to the web site www.geocaching.com, There are 1,268,080 active caches and an estimated 4-5 million geocachers worldwide. In the last 30 days (from today's date), there have been 2,303,462 new logs submitted!

The above web site also provides a wealth of information concerning how to get started, what to leave in a cache, and many items available for purchase to enhance the geocaching experience.

A cursory search of this site's database using my home zip code provided quite a list of geocaches within a 10 mile radius of my home! My wife and I have decided to make some time in the near future and attempt to locate our first geocache. I will post pictures from our first adventure when it happens, including (I hope) our first find!
